But beyond the basic ideas of succeeding in school, 100 Bay County seniors took their first methods toward the next chapter in their lives Wednesday night.

Those seniors had been awarded the Bay Commitment scholarship — a $2,000 college scholarship to become used at either Delta college or Saginaw Valley State University.

Recipients are expected to get the first generation from their household to attend college.

The grant is awarded by way of the Bay Area Community Foundation.

This year, the scholarship was open to all Bay County public schools and integrated a whole new college access network that has helped the seniors’ transition smoothly between high school and college.

“Start strong, ask advice and get involved,” explained Marcus Cooper, a 2009 recipient from the Bay Commitment scholarship, now a sophomore at SVSU. “The start of the college career is most significant.”

Delta College President Jean Goodnow claimed she was a first-generation college student and urged the college-students-to-be to become active on campus and operate challenging.

“You are inside the drivers’ seat…” she explained.”Blaze a brand new trail as you go ahead.”

The Bay Commitment scholarship becomes additional crucial than ever, immediately after Michigan lawmakers cut the Michigan Promise grant last year.
