Available Government Grants for College Education

by admin on November 25, 2009

We have to face the fact that college education is very expensive nowadays. Students who would like to pursue a bachelor’s degree but do not have adequate finances to support their intention might just drop the idea altogether.

However, the government is addressing this issue, ensuring that no person would miss a chance at a good college education just because of financial inadequacy. The government offers grants to eligible and deserving students that they never need to pay back. This is one important benefit of government scholarship compared to grants from private education institutions. Often, private institutions offer educational loans instead of free full grants because they could make money out of these loan programs.

Aside from Pell Grants, the Academic Competitiveness Grant is available to undergraduate freshman and sophomores with excellent academic performance and outstanding leadership qualities. The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant) offer $4,000 awards to undergraduate juniors or seniors studying computer science, engineering, mathematics, or sciences.

Federal states also offer college grants to eligible students. The state of California for example offers the Governor’s Scholarship Programs to public high school students with high academic achievement. Students who receives the Governor’s Scholar Award earns a $1,000 grant while those who receive the Governor’s Distinguished Mathematics and Science Scholar Award, earns $2,500 in grant.

Interested students may contact their high school guidance counselor, the financial aid officer at the university they want to attend or the Federal Student Aid Information Center.
