Campus smoking ban nothing to fume about

the recent decision to impose a ban on smoking on the campus of the University of Louisville, undoubtedly, alter the number of smokers. Yes, this is a free country, and smoking is allowed outdoors. However, smoking is a personal choice. The ban ultimately could encourage many students, faculty and staff to completely rid the habit, helping more people than it hurts.

Smoking on campus raises several significant concerns. On the one hand, it creates a lot of pollution, both air and on the ground. Most college kids can not be trusted to put their cigarette butts in the trash or into a bucket. Then there is always the problem of secondhand smoke. Students should not have to breathe the toxins from the snuff of others. It is impossible to sit on the steps of the library without being bombarded by the smell of cigarettes. Perhaps taking a walk outside the school to blow IGC would not be so bad for smokers who need exercise anyway.

Finally, there is no real reason that smokers should be annoying to have to walk a few blocks to smoke a cigarette. All the ban really means is that students, faculty and staff and to engage in unhealthy behaviors will walk the proverbial (and literal) extra effort, because by next June, has not yet designated smoking areas in the campus.

The school can be stressful and sometimes with a smoke can remove the border. In fact, some students pick up smoking in college because of their stress levels. However, this advantage is only out temporarily, and the bodies of smokers are needed more and more nicotine to satisfy cravings. The University of Louisville is going to try to help those who want to quit with behavioral support groups and nicotine lozenges, gums and patches, and only expect the ban to keep some of the new smokers every time starting.

Banning smoking on campus may irritate a lot of snuff lovers, but Kentucky, probably always have access to cigarettes – which can only be under selection in which to enjoy them. And for the next two months, those of us who do not enjoy the smell of cigarettes will only have to tolerate smoking on campus.
