Being a teacher in college is more exciting and interesting that teaching in public schools. Students are not required to attend and if they do the necessary work, fail or drop out quickly. It is gratifying to be in a classroom where students have an interest in his subject. Then you can guide and instill his enthusiasm and knowledge to the class. As a result, many times in recent years, students have contacted me and thanked me for my guidance. This makes being a university teacher very rewarding.
There are several advantages of being a college professor who does not receive in other fields. As mentioned, teachers are thrilled when students thank you for a great class. It’s an incredible feeling when you receive the applause of the class at the end of the course. Teachers are not locked in an office all day. Full-time teachers are only required to be in their offices during office hours. The rest of the time they are free to go where they please. There are no “bosses” report.
Of course, there is a president or dean who oversees the department, however, not required to report to them and usually do not care. Students normally give great respect to teachers. It’s rare when I have to open a door because the students run and opens for me and allows me to walk past them. Teaching can become routine, but it is mundane. The courses are updated and changed around every semester and you can teach other courses. Personally, I have worked for industry, government and education sectors and have been happier as an educator.
As in all areas, there disadvantages of being a teacher in college, but relatively few. It is increasingly difficult to become an instructor of time and the tenure process is difficult and it is increasingly difficult to obtain. In fact, many schools have tenure longer means that the teacher must continue to meet with the satisfaction of the administrator or they will not receive contract renewals. Income being a teacher in college can be high in prestige, but relatively low. This requires additional classroom teaching or consulting. Few university professors are able to support their families with a single income. However, a growing number of professionals are becoming part-time professional, or complement, the teachers. This exceeds most of the negatives that occur as a full professor, including those with low incomes.
