Before you can be of any improvement made in the number of blacks entering college, there must first be a recognition of people of Afro-American that a disproportionate number of blacks in schools in the United States. Once this recognition has been done then you can take steps to increase the number of blacks entering college.
Established African Americans need to underline the importance of higher education to African-Americans do not realize the benefits of having a college degree. Those in the American community established as Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Oprah Winfrey, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama, have title, impressing the need for young African Americans the benefits of going to college. Young African-Americans need to leave high school to “see” success stories. This will help to encourage them to pursue a life as part of creation, rather than a life as part of the struggle against the establishment.
Once the desire of young African Americans to attend college has been established there must be systems in place to support them financially. More must be done in terms of grants and loans to students to help ensure that young African-Americans not only enter college but also graduate from college.
Many Ivy League universities in America that white students are the majority. There will be some culture shock for African-Americans moving from a prominent school of African-Americans at a school high on white. In addition, some young African Americans may also be ostracized by not own peers. These dynamics may have an adverse effect on the performance of African Americans in college. For these reasons, it is the need of moral support to be offered to African-Americans while in college.
In order to have an improvement in the number of black students entering college, there must be a complete overhaul of the mindset of the African-American population by major college. Afro-Americans should not wait for the white community or government to affect these changes. African Americans need to get together and affect the necessary changes themselves.
