What is Rhodes Scholaship

The Rhodes Scholarship was established following the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902. Although the original purpose of the Rhodes Scholarship as established by Cecil Rhodes was highly discriminatory against certain groups, today the Rhodes Scholarship is available to any and all who meet high standards of scholarship for study at University of Oxford.

Originally there were 52 scholarships. During the ensuing 100 years, the Trustees added at one time or another approximately another 40 scholarships, though not all have continued. Some of these extensions of the scheme to Commonwealth countries not mentioned in the allocation of more detailed Will. A per year per region can be found in Rhodes scholarship allocations. Today, scholars are selected from citizens of 14 specified geographic constituencies, namely: Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica and the Commonwealth Caribbean, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa (South Africa and neighboring countries of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Swaziland), USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Today’s general objective of the Rhodes Scholarship is to bring together leaders and experts from around the world to expose them to new cultures and ideas and broaden their views and sets the mind in an attempt to improve international understanding and peace.
