Why asking questions in college courses is critical to learning

William James in Varieties of Religious Experience tells “the story of a man who was rolling on the night side of a cliff. Finally, he caught a branch which stopped his fall, and has on it in misery for hours. But finally his fingers had to lose his control, and with a despairing farewell to life, has declined. It ‘was just six inches. If I had given up the fight earlier, his agony would have been saved. ”
I draw the moral of the story about the doubts of students to ask questions. It seems there is always a great strength to ask questions and the reasons are fairly standard. People do not want to appear as if you understand something. People do not want to feel stupid. People want to understand things by themselves, without help.
The fight I want to address here and I encourage you to leave, the struggle to understand without help. It is a noble fight, which is what makes it so difficult to leave. I must stress that does not mean abandoning the role of a student encyclopedia. After all, you are your own best teacher, in the sense that they discover things for her is one of the best ways to learn something. However, a great help for this may be your instructor. Watch them and their assistants in the learning process. The teacher is not responsible for their learning or understanding; you. But they can be useful. One way to do is answer the questions you may have. However, to qualify for such aid must be convinced that asking questions does not necessarily mean that you give up your role as a student free. You are in place to fulfill its role as a student’s free.
The relationship between student and teacher is very similar to the relationship between player and coach in the sport. The player is responsible for implementation, but the coach can give advice and tips on how to improve performance. Sometimes the manager does not do so by the player, but often, the player may request an opinion. In practice, the class is usually one where the lessons from the teacher to serve as unsolicited advice. Actors (students) who need extra help must then ask questions.
Everybody needs help with something. Above, I mentioned several reasons for the lack of questions. They do not want to seem still do not understand and do not want to seem stupid. These feelings are understandable, but that may become obstacles to learning where students’ questions to avoid the assistance they need. Now, the places, of course, some classes do not ask questions well and be honest, we all had teachers who are not as open to questions we would like. But even here there is a lesson to learn. Throughout our lives, we will all be with people and situations that are difficult. What we do in response to these challenges will test our resolve. I say that we must face these challenges, accept for what they are and maybe get something from the fight. The psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl once said: “The conditions do not determine, but I know that if I give in to them or challenge them.” Now, certainly a situation in which we meet in class can not be worse than Frankl survived the Holocaust!
However, I’m not saying we should wait for the configuration of class hostility. But in truth are not common and trainers more willing to answer your questions. However, we can not follow you! You have to meet us. As they say, there are no stupid questions, except those who have never asked. Also, if you have a question about something that is very likely that another student has the same problem. Therefore, you are not alone and you’re not alone, and not be stupid to ask your question.
“No man really becomes a fool until he stops asking questions.” Charles Steinmetz
Look at this way. If you went to a restaurant and the waiter did not bring a menu that you seek. If you went to the supermarket and not finding what you’re looking for someone to ask. If you went into a shop and I wanted to try clothes, but could not find the clothes I ask someone. Well, what is so different about the class? As other examples, you pay for a service in the class. You pay for the opportunity to learn something. If you do not get what you pay for someone to ask! Who? The instructor!
What is the worst thing that could happen? Like the man in history in May last drop six inches. You may find that for a moment you feel uncomfortable, you ask your question. But once you get the answers you have won something that is worth the price paid little. And to ask a question may be easier to ask for a second. Furthermore, an application may make another person feel more comfortable asking your question. So, you have helped and also a classmate.
Martin Heidegger, as once said that “questioning is the piety of thought. Many people mistakenly believe that the sign of wisdom or intelligence is not having to ask questions, but the opposite is true. The sign of intelligence is knowing that it is good to ask questions and find answers. Socrates was considered the wisest of all men, knowing that there were many things I did not know. Therefore, the issues raised. I hope that too. It ‘really the best way to pursue its goal of being a student encyclopedia.
