Guam Community College Assistant Professor of Marketing Yvonne Tam has been invited to present her paper, “How to Make a Difference in the Community” at the 19th annual conference with the Community College National Center for Community Engagement (CCNCCE) on May 26-28 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The conference theme is “The Formulas for Success in Services Learning and Civic Engagement.”

Tam, who has integrated service learning into her marketing courses since she joined the GCC faculty six years ago, will speak about its influence on student mastering and on community-based projects. Her presentation will discuss helpful tips in creating effective student understanding outcomes that coincide while using the identified assistance studying projects from the community. The conference highlights ways of creating a project that not just fits and makes an impact in the local community, but also successfully links the curriculum with the concept of assistance mastering. The presentation will wrap up using the participants designing their own innovative service-learning project.

“I can’t imagine teaching without having it,” Tam said of the services understanding component of her class. “It may be an excellent tool to evaluate my teaching standard and to infuse the students with their abilities and knowledge through this activity.” Tam incorporates the community service component in her student mastering outcomes for her courses so students will know precisely what to expect.

In March, GCC was named towards 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. GCC’s recognition was due in big part towards efforts of instructors like Tam, who promote assistance mastering projects in their respective courses.

CCNCCE is really a national training and technical assistance organization with a 14-year history of successfully creating and managing innovative partnerships and disseminating lessons learned throughout the higher education neighborhood. Tam, who was invited by Gloria Schoonover, ASSETS Assistant Program Administrator of CCNCCE, is going to be fully funded by CCNCCE for her conference participation.
